People overgeneralize this observation and routinely use their similarity to an affected individual to infer the likelihood of the same event occurring for the self, even when similarity is normatively irrelevant. Consumers feel increasingly pressed for time and money. We find that consumers with lower childhood SES are more likely to actively devalue an initially chosen alternative after learning that it is unavailable than consumers with higher childhood SES, and they also demonstrate higher motivation to perform subsequent tasks. Research on subsistence marketplaces provides a number of insights about extreme and chronic resource scarcity as well as intangible scarcities in cognitive and affective realms.
